When Technology Becomes Rahu
We live in a world where mobile phones, laptops, tablets, social media and other electronic devices have become an inseparable part of our lives. Technology has transformed the way we work, communicate, learn and entertain ourselves. It has brought the world closer and made information available at our fingertips.
Yet, from a spiritual and astrological perspective, there is another dimension to consider.
The Digital World as a Distraction
Think about what happens when you experience a moment of boredom.
You may automatically pick up your phone. You check a message. Then social media. Then a short video. Then another. Perhaps you read the news, check an email or browse something online. What started as a few seconds can easily become twenty or thirty minutes.
Stimulus → attention → temporary satisfaction → desire for another stimulus.
Similarly, when we feel lonely, anxious, restless or emotionally uncomfortable, the phone can become an immediate source of distraction. Instead of sitting with loneliness, silence, sadness or facing an uncomfertable thought we scroll. It constantly pulls the mind toward something outside of ourself.
Rahu and the Illusion
In Vedic astrology, Rahu is often associated with electronics and maya — fascination with appearances, experiences and desires that can pull the mind away from its centre.
The digital world amplifies this. Social media presents carefully selected versions of people's lives with their achievements and celebrations. We rarely see the complete emotional reality behind those images.
Yet the mind compares and our own life seems inadequate. This can create another form of Rahu's illusion: believing that fulfilment exists somewhere outside ourselves.
Also, our continiously looking for the next experience is Rahu, the chase, the next achievement, the next purchase, the next relationship, the next notification or the next piece of content that will finally make us feel satisfied. But the satisfaction is often temporary.
We Can Know Everything About Others Yet Little About Ourselves
There is an irony in the digital age. We can know what people across the world are doing. We can follow celebrities, influencers, colleagues and strangers.
Yet we may become disconnected from our own inner experience. Do we hear our own inner voice? Do we know what success actually means to us? Do we know what genuinely brings us fulfilment?
This is where returning to the present moment becomes important. The Present Moment Is Where Life Actually Happens. Our emotions exist in the present moment.
Technology Is Not the Enemy
It is important not to misunderstand the message. Technology is not the problem.
Technology is extremely valuable. The goal is not technological rejection. The goal is conscious technology use. A phone should remain a tool. It should not become the place where we automatically go whenever we experience an uncomfortable emotion.
Pause Before You Pick Up the Phone. A simple spiritual practice can be to pause before reaching for your phone, and ask yourself “What am I feeling right now?” Simply become aware. That is the beginning of emotional awareness.
Technology can connect us to the world. But mindfulness helps us reconnect with ourselves.
